SO FRESH: fashion illustrator Caroline Andrieu

My new obsession, fashion illustration. I think because it reminds me of my childhood and my mom's plethora of sewing patterns which the packaging featured the latest fashions.

Courtesy from trendland.net, talented fashion illustrator Caroline Andrieu is a graduate from French school of the Atelier de Sevres and is the Art Director of France Vogue and GQ websites.

Retro Assassin, not just another t-shirt line!

Retro Assassin. The name is indicative enough to peak one’s interest. As was I when I discovered this tight t-shirt line (in the sense of coolness not size!) at the Alliance des professionnels cambodgiens du Quebec fashion show. As the male models beamed in glee from their female admirers, I had my sight set on the rocked-out Tees that are a fresh take to the everyday staple.

Ra Oun is the designer behind the Mtl brand, (his first name being the root of its appellation), states that he created the line “to put a little culture in today’s fashion”. Which he does by expressing is Cambodian background through Asian art and calligraphy illustrated on pop bright t-shirts made from organic material.

Retro Assassin’s kick-ass creed rids yesterday’s trends with the aid of modern day ninjas setting right in the fashion landscape.

Here is glimpse of what keeps his wheels spining, his idea of style and the celeb couple that he would like to recruit to his clan of RAs.

How long have you been designing t-shirts and how did you get started?
Retro Assassin has been on the scene for a little bit over a year now. I learned most of the trade from my years of working in retail.
I’ve always wanted to design my own clothing line, so I just saved up, made a couple of designs and started slowly from there. I always felt that I had somewhat of a good fashion sense, so I just started designing in hopes that others will agree or at-least appreciate what it is that I have to offer to the world of fashion. And if not….oh well….at least I tried. And at least I liked it and was content with what I did.

What keeps your wheels spinning?
Starting up is easy, keeping the momentum going takes work and dedication. But more importantly than all: you have to have the DRIVE to keep going and keep challenging yourself to better yourself, always trying to make it bigger and better than before.

On your site you mention the principles governing the Art of Style. What is your understanding of this art?
Style is a potent thing to have, style commands respect, attention and adulation. It is always important to stand out when putting yourself together, but make sure that whatever you do represents you.  To me it’s not about monetary gains or what car you drive, it’s about how you carry yourself. I think it should be your style that determines your social status and not the size of your bank account.

Besides Asian art, what else inspires you?
Art is important, yes. But what’s equally important is how the t-shirt feels and fits. I like to pride myself in providing clothing that not only looks good, but feels comfortable as well. Most of my new designs are made from bamboo fabric which is soft, lightweight and translucent making it the next generation in textile fibres.
European fashion has also always been one of my greatest inspirations. I’ve always loved the way European designers create garments to fit the body. Fit to me is very important.

Who is your fashion icon?
If I had to name one, I would have to say, Michael Jackson, because he is THE TRUE DEFENITION OF "TRENDSETTER" period!

Which celeb would you like see wearing your t-shirts?
Artists- Kanye, Pharell, Kid Cudi, Drake, JT, MIA, Usher, Andre 3000…just to name a few.
Movie stars - I would have to say,  Brangelina. They’ve really embellished the Cambodian culture and it seems that they  appreciate the country. Most of Retro Assassin’s designs are inspired by my cultural background. To see Brad and Angelina and their kids rock the Tees would be utterly amazing!!!
Oh yeah, Will Smith! Can’t hate on Will Smith!

What dress code do you adhere to?
I just make sure that whatever I put on is comfortable, suits me and represents my sense of style. Most important item of clothing, besides T-shirts, would have to be fresh sneakers.

What do you like to see women wear?
I absolutely adore a woman who knows what she’s doing with what she decides to put on. I just love to see women wearing what they are comfortable in, and what suits their style and personally. I love women that know how to carry themselves and put themselves together gracefully and effortlessly.

What’s new for Fall from Retro Assassin?
A series of Ninja Hoodies for fall/winter 2010.2011, first being launched in black and red. Each Ninja Hoodie will represent the lifestyle and the ways of Retro Assassin by baring the clan’s logo. Also, expect to see newly designed Ninja T-shirts added to our already popular, Ninja Series.

What will your full collection consist of?
I see Retro Assassin as a lifestyle brand. The t-shirts are the foundation. Expect to see, hats, jackets, accessories, shirts, polos, jeans, even toys, you name it we’ll have it!
Sometimes you just have to plant that seed and watch it grow. Just make sure you nourish and take care of it along the way.
Don’t forget to give it a lot of sunlight, in this case “spotlight”!
