I could count on one hand the number of times I've leaped from my seat for a standing O. Yesterday at the V-Franz Spring/Summer 2013 show was one of them. Still a student at LaSalle College, this talented yet ambitious young man, full name VFranz Bernil, proved to sustain a prolific design eye for draping, cutting, and styling.
A lofty spot in Montreal's Chinatown set to a neon-blazing tone was the perfect place to showcase his creations that descended from an escalator. A canny resemblance to Marc Jacobs' Louis Vuitton SS13 presentation just days prior. I'll categorize this as VFranz's potential showmanship quality. This fashion coup is definitely an insight that he fundamentally gets the marketing purpose for a runway show which primarily is to wow the audience and consequently gain media buzz and buyers' appointments. Unfortunately not all Montreal designers have this same disposition.
The models walked to deep Diplo and Jay Z beats while strutting in silhouettes ranging from billowy to boxy. The colour palette went from ethereal blue, metallic green, turquoise, to ink black. Vaporous fabrics were seen in voluminous dresses and tops. I think most people sat up a bit straighter in their seats when the parade of cut-out numbers, revealing the finesse of the female form, marched by. I know I did! There was a slightly erotic allure to these pieces without tramping on the obvious. Be sure to see a cult of cool kids clad in these creations coming to a fashion event near you.
A quite impressive collection for someone who hasn't even received their fashion degree. But yet, this line can guarantee that VFranz has graduated from fashion enthusiast to designer. The future is bright. Bravo!
