ONE TO WEAR: NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM

A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to visit the Montreal headquarters of cutting-edge, high-quality Rare and Raw Japanese jeans brand Naked & Famous Denim
You know, that unique line that features tongue-and-cheek slogans to promote their innovative goods... glow-in-the-dark denim anyone!
While taking a tour around their factory and warehouse, I was schooled about their rooted Japanese philosophies and principles based on the Wabi-sabi theory which describes beauty to be imperfect in nature.

"The brand name Naked & Famous is a satire of our celeb-obsessed culture. We aim to poke fun at “Hollywood” and “Glamour” brands that sell jeans for $300 and up solely because they are celebrity endorsed, and not because they are higher quality."

Using premium Japanese denim, they are cut and sewed on authentic and refurbished machines. Being one for novelty, their designs incorporate fabrics such Kevlar, cashmere, silk, and even camel hair!

Though they have a stronger cult following with their men's selection (I actually snagged a pair of their Double Sided Camo Weird Guy jeans), they are making bold moves to keep the ladies interested by offering denim coated with a glow-in-the-dark resin. How lovely, you can actually still have fun with your clothes on once the lights turn off!

They offer three men's cuts
SKINNY GUY: skinny fit, regular rise.
SLIM GUY: regular rise, straight slim leg
REGULARGUY: Classic Americana
WEIRD GUY: low rise, comfort fit up top with tapered leg (can be worn low on the hips)

For women, there are four cuts
HIGH SKINNY GIRL: skinny leg, high rise
SKINNY GIRL: skinny leg, mid rise
SLIM GIRL: straight leg, mid rise,
BOOT GIRL: boot leg, mid rise

Next week I'll be sharing pics from my visit at their quirky menswear boutique Tate+Yoko!

COLLABORATION: SAVVY STYLE CHALLENGE

One morning in late June I woke up in the wee hours of the morning to catch an early bird flight to Toronto. I remember Instagramming my plane ticket and writing: "Leaving on a jet plane once again! Fashion work, one of the only few things worth waking up at 5:30am!"

I can finally divulge the purpose of my trip!

Along with two other bloggers, that I deem to be quite cool, Vanessa from The Haute Pursuit and Sam from The Beckerman Bite, I was invited to partake in the Savvy Style Challenge hosted by BIC Soleil Savvy in partnership with Flare.

Our mandate: Style 3 looks on 3 models and every item must cost no more than $9.99!

Quite a feat as I've had sandwiches that totaled more than that! Luckily we were in the midst of summer season sales so I had plenty of style choices to pick from.
I went with some on-trends SS2012 looks such as the sporty neon style, globe-trotter tribal, and Lana Del Rey's inspired 1950s sensibility with touches of 80s glam.
In all it took me about three days of research and shopping. Ha! Yes shopping can be considered work - I LOVE what I do!
Once I got to the shooting location it was lights, camera, action where I had to script and recite lines, shoot (many!) takes for the intro to the commercial which is now running on CityLine TV, style the models for the runway show, and provide beauty direction to the team.

LOOK 1: NEON
Sporty accents in bright seperates.

Inspiration: Solange Knowles pop-bright ensembles.

LOOK 2: TRIBAL
Earthy prints accessorized with organic tones.

Inspiration: Donna Karen SS2012 collection

LOOK 3: 1950s REDUX

Inspiration: Lana Del Rey

You can check out all the individual items in the Savvy Style Pinterest page.

There will also be a second dj booth available for djs+fans to try them out!

Pioneer DJ will be on hand to answer questions + there will be give-aways!

PHOTOSHOOT CONCEPT: BOHO QUEEN
In keeping with the music theme and this season's trends,

the concept draws inspiration from the Halston and Newton years of the 1970s nightlife scene and evokes a musing for the boho glam style that was epitomize by the likes of  these I’m-with-the-band beauties: Anita Pallenberg, Marianne Faithfull, Bianca Jagger, and Nico.
The mood exudes these icons' earthy sexuality and bewitching charm.

I'm in the process of creating a DIY headdress... but in the meantime, here's a glimpse of the magic that will go down on Wednesday.
