The closing show at Montreal Fashion Week felt like I was attending the season finale of Project Runway!
Last night Melissa Nepton was awarded as winner of the Target Emerging Designer. Her prize: opportunity to create a collection for Target's Quebec stores with a shop floor date slated for 2014, a 25K grant, and a feature in Elle Quebec.
Nepton presented a graphic lineup of monochromatic stripes and colour-blocking styles. There were the perennial oversized jacket, a trumpet hemline, and a long tunic which were all designs that were reminiscent of her Fall/Winter.13 collection she presented earlier int he week.
The finalist - Anastasia Lomonova, by Thomas, Nisse, and UNTTLD - were a prime example of the city's creative caliber and why this type of initiative and acknowledgment are dire to support, promote, and export our local labels. There are two interesting reads on the state of the Montreal fashion industry, see Le Devoir's "Montréal et la mode - Une réalité loin du faste des défilés" and Huffington Post Quebec "Des grands noms du design refusent de participer à la Semaine Mode Montréal" articles.
